Ramsey County is Hiring a Deputy Sheriff Near Saint Paul, MN

The Ramsey County Sheriff's Office is seeking qualified candidates to fill our full-time and intermittent Deputy Sheriff positions. Ramsey County strives to build a workforce that is reflective of the communities we serve and we are seeking candidates to assist in cultivating community relationships and enhancing our community response and engagement. As a County Deputy Sheriff, you will serve Minnesota’s most diverse county.
The basic functions of this position are to perform law enforcement work such as patrol, investigation and apprehension, security and custody, court security and legal process services; and to perform related duties as assigned.
In order to meet minimum qualifications for this position, you must have either your POST license or POST eligibility letter.   1. Work Performance Test - Physical Demands or Environmental Exposure ChecklistsRepresent the Office of the Sheriff through your interactions with staff, stakeholders, clients, inmates, general public, legal personnel, and others by demonstrating respect, responsibility, honor, and truth.
  2. Provide law enforcement services in any one of the following areas: detention and courts, civil process/warrants, and/or patrol/investigations.
  3. Maintain order and security in a detention facility or in detention units of an assigned hospital by processing admissions to the facility according to established procedures; observing inmates in their living quarters to detect significant changes in their emotional or physical condition and to detect evidence of contraband; providing for mandated inmate services; intervening in problematic or emergency situations; assisting in restraining violent psychiatric patients; processing bonds and other court directed releases.
  4. Provide law enforcement services in the areas of crime prevention, investigation and apprehension by patrolling in an assigned area; investigating, collecting evidence; preparing reports on auto accidents and criminal activities; conducting follow-up and long-term investigations through interviews with victims, witnesses or suspects, undercover operations or use of informants; responding to requests for assistance in medical emergencies, accidents, fires, domestic disputes and police emergencies; enforcing traffic laws; arresting suspects; presenting evidence and testimony in court based on investigations; and coordinating traffic safety programs for schools.
  5. Provide law enforcement service for the safety and security of inmates, civilians, and legal personnel by transporting prisoners to and from jails, prisons, hospitals and other institutions; apprehending and transporting probate patients to security hospital facilities; extraditing felons and fugitives from other states; and executing search warrants to seize controlled substances and contraband.
  6. Maintain order within the courtroom by securing juries in deliberation from outside tampering; providing for the basic needs of jury members; and escorting inmates to and from court proceedings.
  7. Perform law enforcement activities in the area of legal process services by arresting individuals on felony, misdemeanor and petty misdemeanor warrants; and serving notices of court actions.
 (The work assigned to a position in this classification may not include all possible tasks in this description and does not limit the assignment of any additional tasks in this classification. Regular attendance according to the position's management approved work schedule is required.)

Certifications/Licensure: Licensure as a Peace Officer by the Minnesota Board of Peace Officer Standards and Training, and a valid driver's license.
 The examination process will consist of the following sections with each section weighted as indicated:
  • Training and Experience Rating = 80%
  • Oral Interview = 20%
The examination for the Deputy Sheriff will consist of a training and experience rating, comprised of the questions in the attached supplemental questionnaire and an oral interview. The rating on this supplemental questionnaire and score on the oral interview will depend on the answers provided. A candidate must pass the training and experience rating and the oral interview in order to be advanced in the process. Not all applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will pass the training and experience rating. The rating on this supplemental questionnaire will depend on your answers to the questions – do not mark "see resume" or "see work history" as a response. Please answer all your questions clearly and completely. Failure to respond could affect your score and final rank on this examination.
Eligible List: The names of all applicants who filed a properly completed application and passed the examination/screening process shall be placed on the eligible list for an employment opportunity as a Deputy Sheriff. This list will be certified to the appointing authority which may use this list to conduct interviews to fill a vacancy. Candidates will remain on the list for 3 month(s) or until hired, whichever occurs first. A notice will be sent to applicants at the time the eligible list is posted, informing them that the list has been posted and their rank on the list.
The department may choose to interview any candidate on the eligible list.
Veteran's Preference: This is a classified position requiring an open, competitive selection process. Veteran's Preference points will be applied after a candidate passes the examination process. Applicants who are eligible for veteran's preference should update their veteran's DD214, and other supporting documents, and submit them as an attachment at the time of application.
 
Criminal Background Checks: All employment offers are conditioned upon the applicant passing a criminal background check. Convictions are not an automatic bar to employment. Each case is considered on its individual merits and the type of work sought. However, making false statements or withholding information will cause you to be barred from employment, or removed from employment.
To be considered for employment, candidates must successfully complete the following selection process conducted by the Sheriff's Office:
  • Oral Interview
  • Background Investigation
  • Psychological Evaluation
  • Medical Evaluation/Work Simulation
E-Verify Participation: Ramsey County participates in the federal E-Verify program. This means that Ramsey County will provide the Social Security Administration (SSA) and, if necessary, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), with information from each new employee's Form I-9 to confirm work authorization. If the Government cannot confirm that you are authorized to work, Ramsey County is required to give you written instructions and an opportunity to contact DHS and/or the SSA before taking adverse action against you, including terminating your employment. Employers may not use E-Verify to pre-screen job applicants and may not limit or influence the choice of documents you present for use on the Form I-9.
